QUESTION : What should you do if your start article has been blown 6 feet directly to the right of your start flag? This happened to us today on our 2nd track. Since Vivi went to the glove, I had her down and gave her a treat. I then moved it to the start flag where I had her down and treated her before we started to track. Later I was thinking that was not the correct thing to do because I seem to remember a discussion at the November tracking test about not being allowed to put the article on the ground to re-scent the dog and I thought that might apply in this case. Some of Vivi's distractions at the start of the 1st track: A decapitated bird (I thought it was a chicken, but the owner of the property said it wasn't a chicken but she didn't know what it was. They do not own chickens so something dropped it there. Knobbin - His friend, Bentley, died earlier this year so he has been alone, but now he has a new friend... hopefully, they ar...

1. Regarding that tricky first turn, she was moving around sniffing everything and seemed to be trying to pull me up the hill to the walkway for a bit. I just stopped and let her do her sniffing without moving forward and then when she got on the right turn I went with her right away. In hindsight, I wouldn't have put the turn there and would have made the turn a little before that I guess.
ReplyDelete2. I ran the tracks one after another with just a short play and water break in between. The middle school right down the street lets out at 2 pm and I didn't know if kids would be coming to that field to play so I didn't want to stick around much past that time.
3. In the maps, track#1 was the one on the far left, then #2 was the next one and #3 was one to the far right.
4. I did a small food drop about every 3 steps. No scuffing. I have a short stride so usually don't scuff anything because I figure my short stride is close to someone else's scuff.
5. I needed to tell her to down each time. We have worked on that tonight some.
Anne - good job girl, you're killing it with your comments. Carolyn - nice summation and response to Anne's comments. #5 articles need work AWAY from the track. As requested in previous comments, play those games and video them with your phone propped up on the hearth, the couch, the ottoman, etc. Her down should be automatic by now.
ReplyDeleteand....Carolyn is there any reason for the super short second leg on these tracks? does she need the article within 30 yards to make a turn? is it just lack of space?
DeleteLack of space
